Foods to Avoid if You Have Braces

braces Gilroy, CA

Braces are a great way to achieve a more attractive smile and fix any teeth or jaw alignment issues that may exist. However, it is important to care for your teeth and braces throughout treatment in order to achieve the most effective results without suffering any setbacks throughout the process.

What not to eat with braces

By making the necessary diet changes to ensure your braces and oral health remain in good condition, you can ensure the treatment process goes smoothly. The following are five foods to avoid during braces treatment in order to achieve a smile you can truly be proud of and want to show off every day.

Hard candy

One of the most harmful foods a person who has braces can eat is hard candy, such as jolly ranchers, lemon heads and of course jaw busters. Ideally, it is best to avoid hard candy as much as possible with or without braces as they can harm tooth enamel or lead to a chipped tooth, but it is especially important when wearing braces. Be sure to cut out all hard candies from your daily diet to avoid damaging the wire or brackets of the braces.

Chewy foods

Chewy foods, such as caramel and other sticky candies, beef jerky and certain types of granola bars, should also be avoided during braces treatment. Chewy foods can not only damage the braces by pulling on them with every bite, but they can also lead to food getting stuck in between teeth and the braces, which can lead to oral health concerns.

Hard fruits

Hard fruits, such as apples and apricots, can also be harmful to teeth. When biting into a hard fruit, it puts a lot of pressure on teeth, and it can damage braces. Instead, substitute harder fruits for softer fruits that can be consumed in smaller bites, such as grapes or bananas. If you are craving an apple, then either try eating apple sauce or cutting the apple up into small bites.

Popcorn

Popcorn is also not a good idea when wearing braces as it can easily get stuck in between braces and the surface of teeth and cause oral health concerns. Additionally, biting into a popcorn seed may cause the bracket or wire to become damaged and lead to an unexpected trip to the orthodontist.

Ice

Chewing ice may seem like an obvious thing to avoid with braces, but you might be surprised by just how often you are tempted to do so. Many people do not make an effort to chew ice, but they simply find themselves in a position to do so when drinking a cold beverage. Be sure to avoid this temptation and keep your braces in good condition.
