Dental Restoration: Dental Crown Placement

Dental Restorations Gilroy, CA

If you have a damaged tooth, then a dental restoration might be needed, which may happen to be in the form of a crown. Crowns can be made from many materials, including porcelain or metal. Porcelain dental crowns are referred to as natural-appearing ones that do not look out of place in the oral cavity. The dentist can help patients find the right dental restoration option and learn about the placement of it.

What the procedure involves

A damaged tooth may be worn down or weakened, making a crown necessary. The process depends on whether the dentist chooses a same-day or a multi-day procedure. For the traditional dental restoration process, the patient will have to go to the dentist twice. First, the dentist will prepare the tooth that requires a crown, this might include X-rays being done, or a model created of the tooth might be created instead.

Then the dentist can remove and file the tooth down, so the crown will fit on it. An impression will be taken of the tooth so that the crown can be made. Then the patient will have a temporary crown put on the tooth. The impression is sent to a lab so that the permanent, custom-made dental restoration can be made.

This process might take a few weeks for the patient, however, once the crown is finished, the final placement can be done.

With a same day procedure, the patient will not have a temporary crown. Instead, a digital model of the teeth is created by the dentist. With this digital scan, the dentist can make the crown in the office. The dentist can cement the dental crown on the patient’s teeth. It is good to know that not every dentist's office has the right technology for creating these same-day dental restorations.

After getting a crown

Once the patient has the crown, it is vital to care for it correctly. With the right care, it can last for longer. To avoid decay under the crown, it is important to brush the teeth often. It is also necessary to brush at least twice a day or more.

A patient might want to use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. Sometimes, the area around the crown might be more sensitive to coldness or heat. Flossing can keep the teeth in better condition, as well. It is good to avoid hard foods near the crown since that can cause it to crack. Porcelain might be more likely to crack under hard foods. A dentist might recommend that night grinders have a mouth guard to protect the crown.
