What Are the Challenges After New Dentures?

dentures Gilroy, CA

Are you new to dentures? You are not the only one. Every day, thousands of people receive new dentures as a solution for missing teeth. You probably even know someone that has dentures, like your parents, grandparents or other family members and friends. Dentures are a good solution when you have suffered tooth loss. Dentures provide a more aesthetically pleasing look while offering normal tooth function.

Common challenges with dentures

New dentures can cause a few problems when they are used for the first time. A person’s mouth does not immediately recognize them as artificial teeth, instead considering them as a foreign object. It can take a few months to properly adapt to new dentures.

Dentures move around

Patients may notice that dentures move around in their mouth if they are removable. There is a fix for this problem: dental adhesive. The adhesive will prevent the patient’s dentures from moving and can keep them firmly in place. Adhesive makes it easier to adjust to wearing dentures. If the problem persists with adhesive, patients should talk to the dentist. A dentist may have recommendations on how to keep them from moving too much.

Eating can seem difficult

With new dentures, many patients find eating to be difficult. This is solved by keeping to soft foods like eggs and gelatin. Patients should avoid foods that stick to the teeth. Also, patients can use both sides of the mouth when grinding or chewing food. This will promote a feeling of symmetry and balance while using the artificial teeth. Once the patient is used to eating with dentures, eating a variety of foods will become natural again.

Mispronouncing words

A goal for wearing dentures is being able to speak properly. When using new dentures, it can be difficult at first. Patients should speak more frequently but slower than before the dentures were in place. Patients can practice speaking with the dentures in place to help learn better pronunciation techniques and to simply get used to the difference. There are things people can try, such as talking to themselves, reading out loud and engaging in conversations with others more often.

Gum irritation and mouth sores

The patient’s mouth needs to adjust to the dentures and may develop sores and irritation. Gargling with salt water can help with these sores. It is always important to make sure the patient is keeping the dentures clean. This can prevent mouth infections from forming. If the irritation and sores do not let up after a designated adjustment period, the patient should contact the dentist as soon as possible. The dentures may need an adjustment to fit better.

Dentures are a viable solution for missing teeth

If you need to replace one or more teeth, consider dentures as a viable option. People have been using dentures for years, and the success rate is high. Using them can improve your smile and speech, and you will once again be able to eat specific foods that you might not have been able to enjoy before. Consult with a dentist to get the process started for replacing your missing teeth.
