Popular Treatments for a Gummy Smile

There are many different factors that can lead to a person having a gummy smile. This condition is enough to ruin your smile even if you have perfect-looking teeth. The way a person's teeth look is one of the first things others notice about their appearance, and a gummy smile is typically noticeable if over 3mm of gum tissue shows when a person smile.

A healthy smile only displays the teeth and very little of the gums. The gums should be the background of a smile, not the main attraction.

This dental issue is often caused by excessive gum tissue covering the teeth or an overactive upper lip that overextends the upper lip when a person smiles. The treatments used to address a gummy smile often depend on the cause.

Popular treatments used to address gummy smiles caused by an overactive upper lip muscle

1. Lip surgery

Lip repositioning treatments involve the cutting of the lip from the inside and stitching it closer to the person's teeth so that it does not extend enough to reveal the gums.

2. Botox

Dentists are arguably more qualified to administer Botox treatments than plastic surgeons. The lip is stiffened with the treatment, keeping it from retracting when the person smiles. One major downside of this treatment is the fact it wears off after several months, so patients need to get the treatment a few times a year.

Treatments for gummy smiles caused by excessive gum tissue

1. Gum gingivectomy

This procedure can be performed using a laser or scalpel. It is a relatively painless procedure that produces instant results. It should be noted that the gum tissue removed may regrow over time and the process may need to be repeated multiple times.

2. Crown lengthening surgery

This method involves the trimming of the patient's gum and bone tissue, making teeth appear longer and showing less gum tissue when the person smiles. One of the main benefits of this treatment is the fact the results are often excellent and final.

Treatments for gummy smiles caused by long facial structures

Corrective jaw surgery is the primary treatment used to address gummy smiles caused by elongated facial structures. It is an invasive procedure with a recovery period that can be longer than a month.

With so many ways to fix a gummy smile, there is no reason for anyone to feel unhappy with the appearance of their smile due to excess gum tissue being displayed when they smile. A simple visit to the dentist is all it takes to get started on a course of treatment. The best part is there are non-invasive alternatives that allow patients to test out the waters before committing to a treatment plan.

With the excessive gum tissue fixed, patients regain their confidence and self-esteem.
