Help in Selecting The Right Type of Dental Crown For You

If the dentist has suggested that you need a dental, the next action is to decide which type of dental crown is suitable for your needs and situation. This article aims at helping to guide you in the decision process.

A dental crown or cap is a material manufactured in a dental lab for restorations. The crown may be placed on a damaged tooth or fused to an implant. They are essentially permanent restorations because they are designed to feel, appear, and function as a healthy tooth.

Meaning that before having a permanent crown, the dentist will first take a mold, reshape the tooth, and install a temporary crown before the permanent material is ready.

There are several options to choose from when it comes to dental crown materials including all-ceramic, ceramic fused, or all metal crowns. Since the new crown will try to fill in for the old tooth, individual factors and their effects on the strength, aesthetic, and condition of the surrounding gum and teeth must also be considered. Examining the different crown types will guide you when making a decision.

Types of crowns

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns are made from the mixture of gold and other metals but are not a widely used because of their color. Since gold crowns are stronger and long-lasting, they are more suitable for use on the back teeth than front row teeth. They also do not cause allergic reactions to the gums.

Porcelain fused metal crowns

If you want the strength of gold crowns without necessarily having to worry about their appearance, you can choose porcelain-fused-with-metal crowns. Since the metal is covered in porcelain, the crown is both durable and aesthetically appealing. Like gold crowns, they are strong, but unlike gold crowns, they look and feel similar to the natural tooth, which makes them suitable for the front and back teeth alike.

That is not all…

In cases of gum recession, the metal used with the porcelain may taint the appearance of the porcelain by showing dark grey line. Also, if you have bruxism, the crown may not be the best choice because teeth grinding may degrade the crown.

All-Porcelain crowns

These crowns are entirely made from porcelain and look similar to the natural tooth because of their translucence. This aspect makes them the most appealing type of crown. Porcelain crowns are more suitable for the teeth because they give a white and beautiful smile.

The only drawback of porcelain crowns is their strength. They are more fragile and may not be the best option if you want to reinforce your teeth. This may not be a deal breaker if they will be used for front teeth restoration.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconium is a metal element famous for its resilience and strength. This crown type takes a lot less time to mold and shape, compared to conventional crowns because of its lightness. This means that the restoration can be done in no time.

Zirconia is not as appealing as porcelain so you may not get the perfect smile. There is also fewer chances of an allergic reaction.
