Factors to Consider When Choosing Dental Crown Material

A dentist may recommend dental crowns for many reasons, including to repair a cracked or broken tooth or to conceal a discolored tooth for better visual appeal. If you have been booked for dental crown placement, then you need to know that there are various restorative materials available. In this article, we will focus on different dental crown materials and essential factors to consider when making a choice.

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a fitting cover placed over the tooth. Dental crowns can be temporary or permanent, depending on the nature of your condition. If the placement is to strengthen a weak tooth, then the crown may be temporary, but if it is meant to support the tooth after a cavity filling, then the need is permanent.

Common Dental Crown Materials and Factors to Consider

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns have been used for decades and are still relevant because of their durability and fewer reactions compared to other metal materials. The only major drawback of gold crowns is that they are not visually alluring. If the dental crown is for a back tooth, then you should consider this option because of their strength, regardless of the layer’s thickness.

In some cases, porcelain may be fused with the gold crown to improve its durability and appearance. The gold will still be visible, making the porcelain less natural looking. They are also costlier than other materials.

Stainless Steel

If the dental crown is for a baby, then a stainless steel crown may be your best choice. They cover the temporary tooth and allows it to grow until it is ready for replacement by permanent tooth. The crown will be eliminated with the old one.

Stainless steel crowns are provisional, less expensive, and easy to install.

Porcelain (or Ceramic)

These dental crowns have the best visual appeal and natural appearance. This and because they decrease sensitivity to temperature is why they are preferred by many. Like gold materials, they are excellent for people who are sensitive to metal materials.

The only drawback to porcelain crowns is that they are the most fragile of all and may sometimes affect neighboring teeth. They are more suitable for the front teeth.

Metal

If you want a low-cost option, then you should consider choosing metal crowns. While they are the most durable and can withstand hard chewing and biting, they are not ideal for people who have metal sensitivity. Metal crowns also do not have great visual appeal and are better suited on back molars.

It is possible to fuse porcelain with the metal crown if you want a durable and aesthetically appealing dental crown. The metal will still be visible through the porcelain and in the long run, the porcelain may break.

Aside from the quality of the material, you should also consider the cost of the procedure, including the abutment, crown, and the actual process.
