Does Everyone Need a Retainer After Braces?

braces Gilroy, CA

One of the most frequently asked questions an orthodontist receives is whether or not a retainer is necessary.  Understanding the role a retainer plays in the braces process can help you determine why your orthodontist may require it to be worn for the majority of each day after braces are removed.

The importance of wearing a retainer

A retainer helps patients keep their smile straight after braces removal, and in many instances is necessary for the prevention of teeth shifting after treatment. The following is everything to know about the importance of wearing a retainer and whether or not everyone needs one after braces.

What is a retainer?

A retainer is an orthodontic device used to help patients who have gone through any form of teeth straightening keep their teeth in the proper position. Teeth have a tendency to try and shift back into their original position after braces as the underlying bone has not yet adjusted to the realignment. By wearing a retainer, the teeth are kept in place until the bone forms more appropriately around the new position of the teeth. Most orthodontists suggest patients wear a retainer for a large portion of each day after braces are removed, and the amount of time each day the retainer is worn gradually decreases until it is only needed at night.

Is a retainer required after braces?

The short answer is yes, a retainer is needed after braces in almost every single instance. One of the biggest mistakes made after braces removal is not wearing the retainer often enough, which can lead to teeth to shift and the need for further orthodontic care to fix the issue. To avoid this, most orthodontists require patients to wear a retainer frequently for at least a year, and some orthodontists may even recommend patients continue to wear the retainer while they sleep decades after the removal of braces.

Tips for successful retainer wear

It is important for patients to take proper care of their retainer to ensure good oral health is maintained and the retainer does not become damaged. Be sure to follow the orthodontist's specific instructions for retainer wear, which may include the following:

  • Wear the retainer often
  • Keep the retainer clean
  • Protect it from damage
  • Practice good oral hygiene
  • Keep up with the retainer

It is important to keep the retainer clean by rinsing it off several times a day and washing it often. It is also important to prevent it from becoming damaged, which may include keeping it out of the reach of pets and removing it during physical activity. Additionally, be sure to practice good oral hygiene and store the retainer in the case properly to prevent a build-up of bacteria.
