Oral examination

The first step in the Invisalign process is to schedule an initial consultation, during which the Invisalign dentist can conduct an oral examination to see whether or not the patient is a viable candidate for treatment. Invisalign is an option for most people who have a mild to moderate misalignment, but it may not be the best solution for people who have a more severe complication.

Recommendation

After the oral examination, which likely also includes dental X-rays, the Invisalign dentist can discuss treatment options with the patient. If Invisalign is an option and the patient agrees to treatment, then a dental impression can be taken for the creation of the aligners and the treatment process can start. Some Invisalign dentists may also offer braces treatment, and they may be able to help patients with more severe misalignments get the care that they need as well.

Wearing Invisalign

Once the Invisalign aligners are ready, the patient can begin wearing them. The Invisalign dentist is likely to spend an entire visit explaining the process to the patient and educating them on what to do and what not to do during the treatment process. Most Invisalign dentists require patients to come in several times each month and receive new aligners as teeth move into a more well-aligned position. It is important for the patient to follow the instructions closely and wear the aligners as much as possible to ensure that quality results last for a long time.

Retainer wear

The treatment process is not complete once the Invisalign aligners are no longer needed, a retainer is most likely required. A retainer is an orthodontic device that helps ensure teeth do not shift back into their original position following treatment. The patient is likely to need to wear the retainer as much as possible after treatment, and the need for the retainer gradually decreases until it only needs to be worn while the patient is asleep.
