Dental Treatments for Bruxism

Bruxism is the dental term for grinding of the teeth. It is quite common among most people and knowing how to treat it can be beneficial for those who do it. Bruxism can create an array of further oral complications for a person and if left untreated, it can put the teeth and gums at risk for other problems.

Visiting with a dentist regarding bruxism can help a person find a way to treat their bruxism or at least manage it. Today, we discuss dental treatment options for bruxism.

Treatments for bruxism

If a person notices any signs of repetitive bruxism then it’s best that they get to their dentist immediately. The dentist can help recommend or provide treatment options similar to below.

A mouthguard

A dentist may advise that a person invests in a mouthguard. Typically, a person can have their dentist fit them for their own specific nightguard to prevent teeth grinding in the middle of the night. Otherwise, most stores do offer generic mouthguards that can help a person who is grinding their teeth during the night. The use of a mouthguard will help the top and bottom sets of teeth not rub against each other causing bruxism.

Mouthguards may not last forever because the teeth can wear them down. However, having replacement ones ready can allow for a person to continue using them.

Mouth splints

Mouth splints are similar to mouthguards in that they are used when a person is sleeping. They are typically built more durable meaning that they last a lot longer than mouthguards. A splint provides the same thing as a mouthguard does by protecting both the bottom and top teeth from rubbing against each other.

Because mouth splints are made stronger, they don’t have to be replaced as often. They have been said to last for years on end so long as a person doesn’t chew through them. Though costly, they can be beneficial over time.

Surface reshaping

A visit to the dentist for bruxism may result in a treatment method known as reshaping of the surface of the teeth through crowns or overlays. While these procedures can be costly, they can also be effective because it allows for the surface of both the top and bottom teeth to be slightly reshaped so that grinding can’t occur. These treatment methods are most popular for teeth that have been misaligned or cracked due to bruxism.

Conclusion

Bruxism can be a painful habit that a lot of people may not be able to control. While the majority of bruxism does occur when one is asleep, it is also common during conscious times due to stress or anger. Knowing what dental treatment options exist for bruxism can be helpful for those who are experiencing constant grinding.
